Silverado Cafe A Blue Zones 2

Recently featured in Redondo Beach’s Daily Breeze Newspaper was Silverado Café – A Blue Zones Restaurant, an extension of our Silverado Beach Cities kitchen that serves health-conscious cuisine to visitors of the Beach Cities Health District.

In 2004, Dan Buettner teamed up with national Geographic and the world’s best longevity researchers to identify pockets around the world where people lived measurably better. In these areas, which they dubbed Blue Zones, they found that people were reaching the age of 100 at rates 10 times greater than in the U.S.

After identifying these areas of the world, the team set out to identify the common characteristics of the world’s Blue Zones – and in the years that followed, cities across the U.S. began adopting some of these common traits in hopes of creating healthier communities at home.

In 2010, after a Gallup poll ranked the Beach Cities among the highest in levels of stress, anger and worry, the Beach Cities Health District decided it was time for a change. They began revamping restaurant menus, started “walking school buses” for children and created neighborhood gardens to improve the well-being (and life expectancy) of local residents.

Silverado Beach Cities is home to one such restaurant, Silverado Café – A Blue Zones Restaurant located within Redondo’s Beach Cities Health District. Their menu is made up of creative variations of healthy soups, sandwiches and salads; they also take customer requests and sometimes even incorporate these into their ongoing menu.
