WASPWWII ENRICHED

Every day is a celebration at Silverado, and the Silverado Cypresswood Memory Care Community hosted one of the biggest parties of the year. In honor of resident Mayme Tanner’s 100th birthday family members and Silverado associates gathered at the community to celebrate this amazing day and her extraordinary life, including her service as a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) during World War II.

As American history has unfolded over the years, so has Mayme’s amazing story. After receiving her pilot’s license, she decided to further her passion and applied to be a pilot for WASP — a pioneering organization in which female pilots flew aircraft under the direction of the U.S. Military during World War II. Out of the 25,000 women who applied, she was one of the 1,070 who were selected to train as WWII military pilots.

WASP members were responsible for flying sixty million miles of operational flights from aircraft factories to ports of embarkation and military training bases. They also towed targets for live anti-aircraft artillery practice, simulated strafing missions, and transported cargo. As one of the first female pilots to serve during World War II, Mayme has broken barriers and pioneered the inclusion of women in the military and modern day government.

During her birthday bash, Silverado and the WWII WASP museum honored Mayme for her service and efforts in front of family and friends. The celebration included a special video tribute, several military vehicles, a flag presentation and a visit by a staff member from Texas State Representative Patricia Harless’ office. In honor of her centurion status, President Obama and President George Bush sent Mayme a letter thanking her for her service to our nation. Silverado was honored to be a part of Mayme’s celebration.
