At Home Care Through the Eyes of a Child

My mom is a Life Care Manager for Silverado At Home. To me, Silverado is a special place that gives help to those in need - oftentimes to people who don't know where else to go.

I didn't fully understand how critical my mom's role in helping families through difficult situations really was until, one day, a friend at school shared that her grandmother was in need of care. She asked about my mom's job because her mother didn't know what to do or where to go. I briefly explained her job, and my friend's mother immediately got in contact with my mom. Today, my friend's grandmother is receiving care from Silverado At Home and is getting the help she needs while putting her family's mind at ease.

Stories like this have inspired me to get involved as a volunteer. In fact, while volunteering at a Silverado memory care community, I developed a special relationship with one of the residents.

On a typical day my brother and I would socialize with the residents and help out wherever we could. During those visits I befriended one particular gentleman who would light up with joy when he saw me. In turn, he always brightened my day.

One morning, on my birthday, I received an envelope with my name on it.  Inside were small snacks and goodies.  This, my mom explained, was a gift from my favorite resident. The remarkable part of the story is that the resident had remembered my name and birthday - quite amazing for someone with dementia!

This lovely man has been like a grandfather to me, and I will always remember our wonderful interactions. I see that relationship as a gift from my mom, whose work at Silverado inspired me to get involved and create memories I will cherish forever.
