A weekly program for those experiencing early memory loss, and their care partners

Come participate in a weekly program designed to stimulate the mind, body and spirit

We’re currently recruiting for OPICA’s new South Bay Brain Train, a weekly 4-hour program designed specifically for individuals with early-stage memory loss and their care partners.

Participants are taught techniques to support memory and enhance creativity. During these small groups, 6-8 members take part in lively discussions, attend a support group with those undergoing similar experiences, socialize during lunch and discover strategies for optimum health and healing. The Brain Train also provides a weekly, concurrent 90-minute support group for caregivers. All of our programs are facilitated by our professional multi-disciplinary team.
Details

  • During the first hour participants are led through a variety of seated yoga poses by Carol Hahn, MSN, RN, RYT, CPT. Carol is a Wellness & Fitness Coach who helps people over 50 increase their quality of life. She is also a registered nurse, certified personal trainer and registered yoga teacher. Movement during the first hour of the program helps stimulate various regions of the brain as well as the body.
  • The second hour consists of a support group focused on creativity and education. It is facilitated by Richelle Lyon, MA, MFTI who uses various techniques (art, music and mindfulness) to promote group discussions while educating on the support of healthy brain functioning and factors that affect memory.
  • The third hour is lunch time, and provides an opportunity for participants to socialize and benefit from peer-to-peer support.
  • The final hour consists of cognitive stimulation exercises. These sessions are educational, stimulating and fun. The exercises are tailored to meet the specific needs and functioning level of each group.
  • Caregiver Support Group: Another crucial part of our program is a separate 90-minute support group for the family caregiver, which runs concurrently (in a separate room).

The Brain Train is currently expanding into the South Bay
at Silverado in Redondo Beach
This is in addition to our current 5 Brain Train programs in West LA, Mar Vista, Westwood, Brentwood & Olympia Medical Center (see www.opica.org for more details on early memory loss programs). The Brain Train program is weekly and ongoing. Some scholarships and financial assistance available.
