Three Tuesdays a month, a contingent of residents from our Nexus program volunteer at the Laura Bush Branch of the Austin Westlake Library. Their responsibilities include cleaning all the DVD cases and other flat surfaces in the Children’s Area, re-shelving books and reading to any children in attendance.

So far, in the little over a year that this has been one of our projects, these volunteers have accumulated many hours of service!

Most of the “good feelings” comes from actively helping in the community. A large part of this time at the library is also wonderful for social interaction with patrons of all ages. One Tuesday a month, a quilting group gathers in the Meeting Room. They bring their works in progress with them and our residents have an opportunity to learn about this beautiful art form.

Other hobbyists also gather here periodically and the work is often exhibited for the general public. The residents shared, “It offers us a chance to experience new hobbies and ideas”. Other Silverado volunteers look forward to their time at the library because they love reading and believe in the value of early introduction of books to children. They also love it because of the library’s beauty, gorgeous views of the Texas Hill Country and the quiet, peaceful atmosphere.

We are lucky to partner with the library to accomplish our goals. Having a purpose and doing good for others goes a long way in preserving our residents’ self–esteem!
